It's easy to spend three days in Baja - pack up your surfboards, camping gear and buy a few rolls of toilet paper. And if you do a little planning you can make the most of your trip and get a taste of what Baja has to offer. Here are some tips for a fun, weekend surf adventure:
For surfers short on time, this gateway region makes weekend and even one day Baja surf adventures a reality. For example, in a single day it would be possible to surf the grinding beachbreak barrels of Baja Malibu in the morning, the reefbreak peelers of Mama Theresa’s in the afternoon and finish the day off racing down the point at San Miguel. The food here is just as unreal. In our imaginary day, breakfast might consist of a huge plate of huevos rancheros, lunch would be Pacificos and carne asada tacos and if you were still alive for dinner you’d stuff yourself on Puerto Nuevo lobster.
Campgrounds are easy to find and while they may not possess all the amenities of your local KOA, they are totally adequate for the prepared surfer with the right attitude. I love camping in Baja! There is no better therapy then a night spent laughing with your buddies around a smoky Baja beach fire; knowing that in the morning the surf is just a short walk away. This is easy Baja- all you need is some fuel, a cooler and an adventurous spirit to put together a great surf trip. If you are going down into Baja for the first time, read the Surfers Guide to Baja by Mike Parise, download the Baja Surf Maps, and make a tentative plan for food and lodging. If you have an idea of how long you want to stay, where you want to stay and some surf spots to check than you will spend more time enjoying yourself and less time stressing!
